wonky land-o-ports
It’s nice to be pleasantly busy
Thursday: Feist instore @ Sonic Boom was pretty cool. She has a cool voice and an awesome guitar that looks way too big on her.
Friday: I rarely write anything about movies, but Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was AWESOME. I was on such a high after seeing it. We were going to see it at the IMAX but it sold out so we ended up just going to the Metro. But yeah, it was SO COOL. The visuals were amazingly fanciful (as I’d expect from Tim Burton), The Oompa Loompa songs were great, and it was just really well done. I liked it so much I’d be willing to go see it in theatres again (like at the IMAX this time) and I’m definately getting it on dvd when it comes out, which is saying a lot considering how few movies I actually own. (Other movies on my I Want List: Big Fish, and Eternal Sunshine. I also really wish I could find my copy of Frida)
Saturday: Portland! Beck and Le Tigre were both really great. The dude before it was pretty interesting too. Just one dude with a kilt, two keyboards, drum pads on his chest, and a drum kit shoes. It was like being back in the early 80’s. I didn’t really know what to expect from Le Tigre cause I haven’t listened to them much, but it turned out to be really really cool and had me dancing around. And Beck, well, he was just as awesome as I thought he’d be. It was cool knowing just about all the songs he played, and when he played a bit of a Flaming Lips son on his acoustic, and used a table setting for percussion, and well, everything was cool. I got really excited when they pulled out a banjo.
Today: Summer is waking up next to good company and falling asleep in the grass.
So yeah, the past few days have been pretty unproductive but pretty sweet. It’s nice to have someone to go on all these summer adventures with. It’s also nice to be able to spend and extended period of time with someone and not have them drive me crazy. Well, I guess I get a little crazy, but it’s a good crazy.
I have 2 illustration projects lined up too. One for Seattle Weekly, and the other for some grad student doing a kids book. I’m a little worried about the kids book thing cause I’ve had some issues with kids-book-related illustrating in the past. I guess one of the things is the fact that doing a whole book takes a lot of time and people that are writing them seem to want all this stuff done for free. I mean, I don’t really care about how much I’d get for it cause I like having things to do and draw, but I dunno… I guess my past two experiences have made me a little more cautious. It’ll be nice to have new things to put in the portfolio though, which really needs to be updated. okay, I’m suppose to be working on Japanese hw.. I guess I’ll get back to it.
